What do I need to get started?
You can purchase a ready to go kit. Each kit will consist of the 3 main components:
- Unichip (the brain of the kit)
- Harness (this is how the Unichip is connected to the vehicle)
- Tune (this is the tune that is loaded into the Unichip)
What is the Unichip?
The Unichip is a piggyback computer that integrates intelligently with the factory ECU, with over 6 million active installations worldwide
What if you don’t have a Unichip kit for my vehicle?
You can vote for your vehicle if it is a popular vehicle we will build a kit for it
Can I tune my own vehicle?
Yes, you can tune your own vehicle. First, you need to know that there are two different sets of software one for tuning and one for remapping the Unichip. See FAQ 300 and FAQ 350 below for more details.
Tuning your own vehicle is only suggested if you are comfortable with tuning software. The easiest would be to purchase a plug and play kit that has already been tuned. Then you can just open the maps and make some minor adjustments. With that said, all Unichip Plug and Play kits are not the same, some are very advanced and are best left for experienced Unichip Tuners.
- The tuning software is used to tune the Unichip connected to your vehicle.
- The Remapping software is used reprogram your Unichip with a map that already exists. We have the world largest database of Unichip tunes

What is the difference between a ECU, ECM and PCM
ECU – ENGINE CONTROL UNIT
The term electronic control unit (ECU) is often used as a generic term for any built-in system that controls multiple electrical features in a car. It could include the Body Control Module (BCM), Brake Control Module (BCM), Central Control Module (CCM), Central Timing Module (CTM), and many others. This depends on the car manufacturer.
ECM – ENGINE CONTROL MODULE
An ECM is an engine control module, sometimes referred to as an engine control unit (ECU). This computer takes incoming sensor data and uses that information to alter the function of electronic systems for better performance. The first ECMs introduced in the early 1980s could only control fuel injection, but as electronics and engine design have improved, the function of these devices has spread to almost every aspect of the operation.
In a modern engine, the ECM will gather information from the intake, exhaust, cooling system and several internal components to judge the running condition of the engine. From there, it can decide the position of the camshafts, the throttle position, ignition timing, fuel injection timing and, in turbocharged cars, wastegate pressure.
TCM – TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE
Before we get into the PCM, let’s talk about the Transmission Control Module (TCM) since it works in tandem with the ECM. It’s sometimes referred to as a transmission control unit (TCU). This device uses incoming sensor data to determine when the transmission needs to shift. Over the years, the functionality of these devices has improved, adding input from the cruise control, throttle and traction control system, reducing gear hunting and wheel spin.
Both automatics and dual-clutch manual transmissions have TCMs, but traditional manual transmissions do not. Electronic functions for manual transmissions are done by the ECM, if at all. For example, the Active Rev Matching in a Corvette matches clutch and engine RPM during shifts using wheel speed data from the traction control system and a shifter position sensor on the transmission.
PCM – POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is the main computer in the automobile that controls all its functions. By placing control of both the transmission and engine into one unit, the PCM can better coordinate their functions for better power delivery and fuel economy. For example, when the PCM decides to change gears, it can back off the throttle to make the shift smoother.
Although a PCM may look like a single unit from the outside, most contain a separate ECM and TCM, each with their own processor and programming ROM. These act independently during most operations, sharing data when a function requires both systems to work together. For tuners, that means programming can be updated on one system while leaving the other untouched.
The PCM senses and monitors more than 100 factors in a car or truck. Here are a few of the most essential processes.
– Air-to-Gas Ratio – The PCM adjusts the air-to-gas ratio being pumped into the cylinders of the car, which saves fuel.
– Ignition Timing – The PCM can control the speed of spark plug firing, helping the engine deliver an optimum amount of power per RPM.
– Idle Speed – The PCM ensures that your car’s idle speed is not revved up to a higher than necessary RPM to manage any ancillary activities, such as air conditioning.
– Performance Monitoring – Using sensors such as temperature, oil and fluid level, air intake, emission level, camshaft angle, or throttle position, the PCM can monitor the car’s performance. When the PCM can’t restore them to ideal levels, the check engine light will appear.
WHY THE CONFUSION BETWEEN ECM AND PCM?
There are three primary reasons why these terms are often confused:
– Vehicle Manufacturer – The types of computer modules you have and how they’re configured in your car depending on the manufacturer, so you’ll want to consult your owner’s manual to be sure of their specific terminology.
– Modern vs Older Vehicles – Since 1996, there’s been a shift toward a single operating unit (the PCM) in vehicles. The PCM manages all systems, but as noted earlier, they can still work independently. Older automobile models had two computers, the ECM and the TCM. The ECM controlled the engine function and the TCM controlled the transmission. For cars with a manual transmission, they only had an ECM because there was no need for a computer to operate the transmission functions

Can I use the Unichip Demo software to tune my vehicle?
No: The Demo software can not be used to tune your vehicle. It is there for demo purposes only and can’t communicate with a Unichip. The Unichip Demo software is to give you an idea of what the software screens look like
Understanding Unichip File Extensions
If you set your computer to show file you would be able to see the file name with the extension after the file name.
Unichip Q File Extensions are:
- HEX: All Q version Unichip’s use the .hex file extension. Each .hex file can only hold one Unichip map.
- COL: The .col file displays the highlighted cell colors on the map during tuning. Each time the insert button is press it will mark the cell. If you delete the .col file all the highlighted colors will be reset to default.
- DAS: The .das file is the firmware file that is embedded in both the Unichip Tuning and Mapping Software. To get the latest firmware file you need to download the latest software
- MMG: The .mmg file is Unichip’s multi-map file and holds 5 maps. You can convert a .hex file to a .mmg file using the Unichip Tuning software.
- MST: This is a master file that is write-protected, the software will prompt you to save it as a new file that will be saved as a .hex file.
- MMM: Multimap Master Map – The master file is a starting map that is configured for the vehicle setup. It would have the correct timing, load and fuel setup
New Unichip Version X File Extensions
- MMGX: The .mmgx file is used on the new generation Unichip’s multi-map file and holds 5 maps. You can convert a .hex file to a .mmg file using the Unichip Tuning software.
- XAS: The .xas file is the latest Generation X firmware file that is embedded in Unichip Tuning. To get the latest firmware file you need to download the latest software.
- HEX.MMGX: The .hex.mmgx file is a converted Unichip Q file which was converted from a .hex to a .mmgx file. The software will combine the two file extensions which make it easy to identify a file that was converted from a Q to an X version.
- MMGM: Multimap Master X version Map – The master file is a starting map that is configured for the vehicle setup. It would have the correct timing, load and fuel setup
What is the difference between Personal and Workshop Use Software?
Workshop Use Unichip Tuning Software
Workshop use software is more expensive but has full tech support and does come with real-time tuning pots.
Personal Use Unichip Tuning Software
Personal use software is more affordable but has limited tech support and does not come with tuning pots.

How do I get an Unlock Code for my Unichip Tuning Software
You can request an unlock code at the link below, but it is IMPORTANT to read the TIPS below
- The unlock code will only work on the Laptop/PC that was used to generate the registration file.
- The unlock code cannot be reused a second time, even if you reinstall the software, on the same computer a second time
- The unlock code will be emailed to you during regular business hours Monday to Friday (Time Zone GMT UTC +2)
- You must be a Unichip USA customer with a USA address and phone number
- You must full out all the fields such as User Name, Company, Country and Tel in the “Unichip Software” user “Registration Form”

What is a Plug and Play
A plug and Play kit is ready to go Unichip kit with everything that you would need to install the kit into your vehicle.
A plug and play kit will have the following:
- The correct Unichip pre-programmed for your vehicle.
- All the tuning is already done
- It will come with an StS or StE kit see vehicle specific page.
- StS – Straight to Sensor
- StE – Straight to ECU
- Installation time would vary between 10 to 30 minutes depending on the vehicle.
What is a DiY (Do It Yourself) Kit?
A DiY kit is a hardwired kit that needs to be soldered into the ECU harness. This is typically done on older vehicles where the ECU harness is not available anymore.
This is also a great option if you are on a tight budget and are comfortable soldering wires.
What is a StS (Straight to Sensor) Kit?
An StS (Straight to Sensor) kit is ready to go plug and Play kit. This kit connects directly to each individual sensor. Each kit comes pre-mapped with tunes to match your aftermarket bolt-ons as well as easy to follow instructions. All hardware included. Installation time is between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the vehicle.
